How to make homemade pumpkin pie spice with cinnamon, ginger, cloves and nutmeg. Perfect for fall baking!
Somehow I have never shared my homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe… even though I have a ton of recipes that include pumpkin pie spice. Obviously you can buy pumpkin pie spice at most grocery stores, but it’s super easy to whip up. You might even have all of the ingredients in your pantry right now!
This recipe makes 3 Tablespoons. I felt like this was a good amount and gives you enough for a couple pumpkin recipes. Of course you can always double or even triple the recipe if you need a bigger batch.
Between this recipe and my blackened seasoning recipe, I feel like I need to make a spice blend series! Are you a fan of making your own spice blends?
What is Pumpkin Pie Spice Made Of?
Pumpkin pie spice is a mixture of the following dried spices:
Some recipes also include allspice and/or cardamom in the mixture, but these are optional. See my note in the recipe below.
What Can You Use Instead of Pumpkin Pie Spice?
One easy substitute for pumpkin pie spice is apple pie spice. Apple pie spice has a similar spice profile, namely cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg and allspice. The only additional spice that is missing from apple pie spice is ground cloves so if you use apple pie spice instead of pumpkin pie spice, you could add a little ground clove to the recipe if you’d like!
If you’re really in a pinch, you could try a different combination of the spice blend above, but know it might not taste exactly the same……
